Il y avait, il y a très longtemps, dans le temps d'avant le temps, un royaume étrange. Un royaume vide, désert, dominé par une montagne de cristal, si transparent, si lisse, ce cristal, que les gouttes de pluie glissaient dessus sans qu'il soit mouillé.  Rien, aucune graine, aucune fleur, rien ne pouvait s'accrocher aux flancs de ce roc translucide. Même la lumière passait au travers sans s'arrêter.

Au sommet, un palais du même cristal était ciselé et, au centre du palais, un enfant. Un petit prince, solitaire et préservé, qui avait été déposé, là, depuis toujours. D'innombrables mains, invisibles et efficaces, devançaient le moindre besoin, le plus petit désir du prince . S'il avait froid, aussitôt, une douce et chaude couverture glissait sur lui. S'il avait soif, des boissons sucrées, délicieuses, se présentaient à portée de main. A peine désirait-il entendre quelque chose que tout un orchestre apparaissait dans le palais. Il était entouré de tous les jouets imaginables, de peluches géantes, de petites voitures parfaitement imitées, avec les portes qui s'ouvrent et même de petits moteurs qui tournaient dans un doux ronronnement. Il avait des villes entières en légo et des puzzles en trois dimensions. Des merveilles de jouets que l'on n'ose même pas rêver... S'il avait le pouvoir de tout faire apparaître, il avait aussi celui de tout faire disparaître.

He was surrounded by all the imaginable toys, giant stuffed animals, small cars perfectly imitated, with the doors opening and even small engines turning in a soft purr. He had whole towns in lego and puzzles in three dimensions. Wonders of toys that one does not even dare to dream ... If he had the power to make everything appear, he also had the one to make everything disappear.

Et, ce jour-là, il avait tout fait disparaître. Il était seul au centre du palais.   

IL S'ENNUYAIT.  Alors, comme souvent pour s'occuper, il se mit à manger . Il mangeait, il mangeait, IL MANGEAIT. De plus en plus, des choses de plus en plus grosses, de plus en plus énormes, il mangeait, il mangeait sans pouvoir s'arrêter. Tout ce qui lui passait par la tête, aussitôt, il l'avait devant lui et le dévorait : une forêt de frites, une tour de steaks hachés, une montagne de gâteaux.... Il eut envie de glace à la fraise : elle apparut, il commença à l'avaler, l'avaler, au début, c'était bon, délicieux, mais il n'en pouvait plus et en même temps, il ne pouvait s'empêcher d'avaler.... Et la glace grossissait, grossissait, il allait éclater, elle grossissait plus vite qu'il ne pouvait la manger, il n'en pouvait vraiment plus mais comme il pensait toujours à elle, elle continuait à surgir encore et encore....

And the ice was growing, growing, it was going to burst, it was growing faster than it could eat, it could not really anymore but as he always thought of her, she continued to rise again and again ....

Elle se mit à fondre aussi et à envahir tout le palais, ça montait, ça montait.... Bientôt, le prince dut nager dans la glace fondue pour continuer à respirer, il ne pouvait plus l'arrêter. Lui, il n'avait rien où s'accrocher, tout était glace fondue, tout était fraise dégoulinante et collante. Le prince s'épuisa vite à nager là-dedans, il n'avait plus de force, plus aucune force. Bientôt, il allait mourir noyé! ! !

Je viens de l'océan immense qui entoure ta montagne de cristal. Cela fait longtemps que je t'observe, petit bonhomme tout seul dans ta bulle transparente. Quand j'ai vu qu'elle devenait toute rose, toute rose et que ça ne s'arrêtait pas, je me suis inquiété pour toi...et je suis venu.

Le prince s'accrocha au cou du dauphin qui se mit à nager vers une fenêtre du palais.

Le prince eut un peu peur, c'était la première fois qu'il quitterait sa montagne de cristal, il sentit bien qu'il ne pourrait pas y revenir, il ne connaissait que son palais, que les mains invisibles qui satisfaisaient ses désirs, tous ses désirs...Comment serait sa vie désormais ?...Il serait seul avec ce nouvel "ami "...

L'océan immense tout à coup l'effraya. The immense ocean suddenly frightened him.

" N'aie pas peur, je te protégerai, viens, s'il te plaît, viens avec moi ! "

Et l'on put voir le prince, sur le dos du dauphin, glisser, glisser le long du cristal de la montagne comme le long d'un toboggan immense, on les vit s'éloigner, bondissant par dessus les vagues tandis que le rose de la glace à la fraise formait dans l'eau de l'océan une belle barrière de corail... Et le petit prince glissa à l'oreille du dauphin :  " Tu sais, c'est la première fois que j'ai un ami... "
